Serbia declares state of emergency due to heavy rains

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has issued an order to deploy armed forces in the threatened area to help the people.

Rivers overflowed in the Raska region of southwest Serbia. The towns of Novi Pazar, Tutin and Prijepolje were heavily flooded and a two-year-old boy drowned near Tutin in the river Vidrenjak, swollen by several hours of rain, according to local reports.

The authorities closed primary and secondary schools in the Novi Pazar area as large amounts of water were expected from the surrounding mountains during the night.

The intensity of the rain will weaken significantly on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, precipitation will still be expected in the territory of Serbia, but it will be occasional and local with a significantly smaller amount compared to the previous period, according to the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia.
