“At noon yesterday, I went before His Majesty, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and presented a request letter to His Majesty, regarding the dissolution of the Parliament,” Yaakob said in a statement on Facebook.

“In accordance with Article 40(2)(b) and Article 55(2) of the Federal Constitution, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong acted according to His Majesty's discretion by granting my request, that the 14th Parliament be dissolved today, Oct 10, 2022,” he added.

The decision comes after months of pressure from a faction of Umno leaders aligned with their president who want polls to be held before the due date next year.

Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob has served as the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia since August 2021. (ILKHA)
