Magnitude 6.8 quake hits western Mexico

A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico early on Thursday, The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

It comes just days after two people were killed and many others were injured when a powerful earthquake hit the same region.

The quake struck at 1:16 a.m. local time on Thursday and was centered about 39 kilometers southwest of Aguililla, a city in the state of Michoacán, according to the USGS.

“We had a 6.9 magnitude aftershock with an epicenter in Coalcomán. It was felt in Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Mexico City. So far, no damage has been reported,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Twitter.

No tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said. (ILKHA)
