The magnitude 7.6 quake occurred shortly after 1 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Monday near the western coast and close to the Michoacan border with the state of Colima, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit on the same day as a 1985 earthquake that killed an estimated 10,000, and one in 2017 that killed at least 350 people.

“Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán, Secretary of the Navy, informed me that a person died due to the fall of a fence in a shopping center in Manzanillo, Colima,” Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Twitter.

The earthquake left 1.2 million people without power in Mexico City, the neighboring State of Mexico, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, the Federal Electricity Commission said, adding that electricity has already been restored to 68 percent of those affected. (ILKHA)
