Iraq: Death toll from shrine collapse rises to 8 in Karbala

On Saturday afternoon, the landslide hit the roof of the Qattarat al-Imam Ali, which then collapsed on top of visitors inside, trapping some people alive under rubble.

Jawdat Abdelrahman, director of the civil defense media department, said that they had recovered two bodies, a man and a woman, from the rubble of the Qattarat al-Imam Ali shrine.

According to Iraqi officials, the cause of the incident was a buildup of moisture in the earthen berm adjacent to the shrine. (ILKHA)
