Italian PM Mario Draghi resigns after failing to revive coalition

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday after failing to revive his coalition government.

“Mr. Mario Draghi has offered his resignation,” said a statement on Thursday morning issued by the office of President Sergio Mattarella, which added that Mr. Mattarella took note of this.

“The government remains in office for the handling of current affairs,” the statement noted.

Mario Draghi has been Prime Minister of Italy since February 2021. Prior to his appointment as prime minister, he served as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) between 2011 and 2019.

Draghi was also Chair of the Financial Stability Board between 2009 and 2011, and Governor of the Bank of Italy between 2006 and 2011. (ILKHA)
