Turkey’s tourism income jumps 122.4% in Q1—statistical agency

In the first quarter which is January, February, and March of 2022 tourism income increased by 122.4% and reached 5 billion 454 million 488 thousand dollars, the Turkish Statistical Institute said.

While 76.5% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 23.5% was obtained from citizens resident abroad.

Visitors organize their travel individually or with package tours. While individual expenditures constituted 4 billion 852 million 137 thousand dollars of the total tourism income, 602 million 350 thousand dollars of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

In this quarter, all expenditure types increased compared to same quarter of the previous year. Sports, education, culture expenditure increased by 306.6%, Package tour expenditure (share of Turkey) increased by 287.7%, and international transport expenditures increased by 135.9%.

Average expenditure per night was 68 dollars

In this quarter, while average expenditure per night of the foreigners who stayed overnight was 75 dollars, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was 51 dollars.

Number of departing visitors increased by 148.1%

In this quarter, number of departing visitors increased by 148.1% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 6 million 451 thousand 657 persons. While 76.6% of visitors was foreign with 4 million 943 thousand 964 persons, 23.4% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 1 million 507 thousand 693 persons.

In this quarter, foreign visitors visited Turkey mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive and cultural activities" with 52.1%

The secondary purpose of visit was "visiting relatives and friends" with 24% and the third was "shopping" with 10.1%. Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 62.4%.

Tourism expenditure increased by 181.3% 

Tourism expenditure which is the expenditure of the Turkish citizens resident in Turkey and visited abroad, increased by 181.3% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 664 million 989 thousand dollars. While 623 million 265 thousand dollars of total expenditures was individual expenditures, 41 million 724 thousand dollars of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

Number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 269.6%

In this quarter number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 269.6% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 1 million 39 thousand 666. Average expenditure was 640 dollars per capita. (ILKHA)
