Turkey’s inflation hits a 20-year high of 61.14%

The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 61.14% annually and 5.46% monthly, the Turkish Statistical Institute said in a statement on Monday.

A rise in general index was realized in CPI (2003=100) on the previous month by 5.46%, on December of the previous year by 22.81%, on same month of the previous year by 61.14% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 29.88% in March 2022.

Compared to general CPI, lower annual change observed in 9 main groups while 3 main groups were higher

The lowest annual increase was 15.08% in communication. Education with 26.73%, clothing and footwear with 26.95% and health with 34.95%, were the other main groups where low annual increases realized. On the other hand, transportation with 99.12%, food and non-alcoholic beverages with 70.33% and furnishings and household equipment with 69.26% were the main groups where high annual increases realized.

In March 2022, clothing and footwear with 1.78%, housing with 1.84% and recreation and culture with 2.78% were the main groups that indicated lowest monthly increase. On the other hand, transportation with 13.29%, education with 6.55%, and hotels, cafes and restaurants with 6.04% were the main groups where high monthly increases realized.

In March 2022, within average prices of 409 items in the index, the average prices of 69 items decreased and the average prices of 27 items remained unchanged while the average prices of 313 items increased.

The indicator for CPI having specified coverage (B) increased by 51.34% annually and 4.24% monthly

A rise in CPI excluding unprocessed food, energy, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and gold was realized in CPI (2003=100) on the previous month by 4.24%, on December of the previous year by 16.38%, on same month of the previous year by 51.34% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 27.48% in March 2022.
