Turkey: More than half a million couples get married in 2021

While the number of couples who got married was 488 thousand 335 in 2020, it was 561 thousand 710 in 2021, according to the statement.

While the number of couples who got divorced was 136 thousand 570 in 2020, it was 174 thousand 85 in 2021. Crude divorce rate expressing the number of divorces per thousand population was 2.07 per thousand in 2021.

Mean age at first marriage was increased

When the mean age at first marriage was analyzed by years, it was seen that there was increase in both sexes. Mean age at first marriage was 28.1 for males and 25.4 for females in 2021. Mean age difference at first marriage between male and female was 2.7 years.

The highest crude marriage rate was in Kilis with 8.27 per thousand

The province having the highest crude marriage rate was Kilis with 8.27 per thousand in 2021. Kilis was followed by Şanlıurfa with 8.06 per thousand and Adıyaman with 7.99 per thousand. The province having the lowest crude marriage rate was Gümüşhane with 4.86 per thousand. Gümüşhane was followed by Tunceli with 5.11 per thousand and Bayburt with 5.22 per thousand.

Significant changes were observed in the number of marriages by months

When the number of marriages is analyzed by months, an increase was observed in the other months of 2021 compared to the same months of the previous year, except for January and February. While there was a decrease in the number of marriages in April and May due to both the lockdown during the pandemic and the effect of Ramadan, a significant increase was observed in June. While the number of marriages was 21 thousand 676 in May 2021, it increased 3.5 times and became 75 thousand 137 in June.

When the marriage of foreign persons in total marriages was analyzed, the number of foreign grooms was 4 thousand 976 in 2021 and it was 0.9% of total grooms. On the other hand, the number of foreign brides was 23 thousand 687 and it was 4.2% of total brides.

When foreign grooms were analyzed by citizenship, German grooms took first place with 25.2% in foreign grooms. German grooms were followed by Syrian grooms with 20.7% and Austrian grooms with 5.5%.

When foreign brides were analyzed by citizenship, Syrian brides took first place with 14.6% in foreign brides. Syrian brides were followed by Azerbaijani brides with 10.1% and Uzbek brides with 9.8%.

The highest crude divorce rate was in İzmir with 3.04 per thousand

The province having the highest crude divorce rate was İzmir with 3.04 per thousand in 2021. İzmir was followed by Antalya with 3.01 per thousand and Uşak with 2.93 per thousand. The province having the lowest crude divorce rate was Şırnak with 0.38 per thousand. This province was followed by Hakkari with 0.40 per thousand, Siirt and Muş with 0.46 per thousand.

 Significant changes were observed in the number of divorces by months

When the number of divorces is analyzed by months, a significant decrease was observed in August due to the judicial holiday. While the number of divorces was 3 thousand 779 in August 2021, it increased 5.8 times in September after the judicial holiday and became 21 thousand 955.

33.6% of divorces occurred in the first five years of marriage

When the proportion of divorces are analyzed by the duration of marriage, 33.6% of divorces occurred in the first five years of marriage and 20.9% of divorces occurred in the marriages with the duration of 6-10 years in 2021.

Last year 165 thousand 937 children were affected by the divorce of their parents

As a result of the divorce cases, while 174 thousand 85 couples were divorced, 165 thousand 937 children were given to guardianship in 2021. It was seen that as a result of divorce cases, guardianship of children was mostly given to the mother. 76.1% of the guardianship of the children was given to the mother and 23.9% to the father in 2021.
