Steinmeier re-elected as Germany’s president

Incumbent President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, 66, a Social Democrat, who was previously Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2017, as well as Vice-Chancellor of Germany from 2007 to 2009, has been in office since March 2017.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected with a big majority by the Federal Convention, which brings together members of parliament’s lower house, a large number of local elected officials, former German leaders, and certain civil society personalities.

In his speech to the special assembly after being elected, Steinmeier said: “My responsibility is for all the people who live in our country. Non-partisan, yes — but I am not neutral when it comes to the cause of democracy. Whoever fights for democracy will have me on his side. Whoever attacks it will have me as an opponent.”

Steinmeier took office as President of Germany on 19 March 2017, after the expiration of his predecessor's term in office, and on 22 March 2017, he took the oath that newly elected presidents must take before a joint session of the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, according to the Basic Law. (ILKHA)
