Turkey’s tourism income increases by 95% in Q4

In the fourth quarter which is October, November, and December months of 2021 tourism income increased by 95% and reached to 7 billion 631 million 374 thousand dollars, the Turkish Statistical Institute said.

While 80.1% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 19.9% was obtained from citizens resident abroad.

Visitors organize their travel individually or with package tour. While individual expenditures constituted 5 billion 883 million 106 thousand dollars of the total tourism income, 1 billion 748 million 268 thousand dollars of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

Tourism income in 2021 increased by 103% and reached to 24 billion 482 million 332 thousand dollars compared to the previous year. While individual expenditures constituted 19 billion 679 million 915 thousand dollars of the total tourism income, 4 billion 802 million 417 thousand dollars of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

In this quarter, all expenditure types increased compared to same quarter of the previous year. Package tour expenditure (share of Turkey) increased by 202.5%, tour services expenditure increased by 162.4% and sports, education, culture expenditure increased by 143.5%. In this year the highest annual increases were in tour services expenditure.

Average expenditure per night was 63 dollars

In this quarter, while average expenditure per night of the foreigners who stayed overnight was 72 dollars, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was 43 dollars.

In this year, while average expenditure per night for total overnight visitors was 66 dollars, the average expenditure per night of foreigners was 73 dollars, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was 50 dollars.

Number of departing visitors increased by 97.5%

In this quarter, number of departing visitors increased by 97.5% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 9 million 50 thousand 112 persons. While 83% of visitors was foreign with 7 million 511 thousand 28 persons, 17% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 1 million 539 thousand 84 persons.

In this year, number of departing visitors increased by 85.5% compared to the previous year and reached to 29 million 357 thousand 463 persons. While 81.5% of visitors was foreign with 23 million 940 thousand 21 persons, 18.5% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 5 million 417 thousand 442 persons.

In this quarter, foreign visitors visited Turkey mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive and cultural activities" with 68.6%

The secondary purpose of visit was "visiting relatives and friends" with 16.9% and the third was "shopping" with 5.2%. Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 65.1%.

In this year, while foreign visitors visited Turkey mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive and cultural activities" with 71.4%, Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 64.5%.

Tourism expenditure increased by 276.4% 

Tourism expenditure which is the expenditure of the Turkish citizens resident in Turkey and visited abroad, increased by 276.4% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 696 million 183 thousand dollars. While 677 million 89 thousand dollars of total expenditures was individual expenditures, 19 million 94 thousand dollars of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

In this year, tourism expenditure increased by 67.7% compared to previous year and reached to 1 billion 851 million 922 thousand dollars. While 1 billion 819 million 811 thousand dollars of total expenditures was individual expenditures, 32 million 111 thousand dollars of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

Number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 301.6%

In this quarter number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 301.6% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 1 million 188 thousand 803. Average expenditure was 586 dollars per capita. 

In this year, number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 22.1% compared to previous year and reached to 2 million 738 thousand 340. Average expenditure was 676 dollars per capita. (ILKHA)
