“In an unfortunate incident today, Train no. 15633 Bikaner – Guwahati Express got derailed near New Domohani station under Alipurduar Jn division of N.F. Railway,” the Ministry of Railways tweeted.

“It looks like there are no more people trapped in the carriages. Workers were restoring the track to allow other trains to pass,” said Gurmeet Kaur, a railway spokesperson.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he spoke to Railways Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and took stock of the situation in the wake of the train accident. “My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly.”

Inadequate investment in infrastructure in the vast network that means overcrowded trains cause deadly rail accidents in the country.

India's deadliest rail accidents were the Bihar train disaster (600–800 killed), the Firozabad rail disaster (358 killed), the Gaisal train disaster (285 killed) and the Khanna rail disaster (212 killed). (ILKHA)
