Alikhan Smailov becomes Kazakhstan's new prime minister

Kazakhstan President Kasım Cömert Tokayev presented Tuesday the candidacy of Alihan Smailov for the post of prime minister at the general meeting of the Assembly of Kazakhstan.

“In accordance with Article 44 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev nominated Smailov Alikhan Askhanovich for the post of Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan for consideration by the Majilis of the Parliament,” a presidency statement said.

"Following the discussions, the parliament approved Tokayev’s proposal to appoint Alikhan Smailov as Prime Minister," the satetment added.

Previously, Alihan Smailov served as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan under Askar Mamin. He at the same time served as the Minister of Finance from September 2018 until May 2020.

Smaiylov has been nominated on Wednesday as the new prime minister of Kazakhstan by the country's president following the 2022 Kazakh protests. (ILKHA)
