Turkey’s cereal production decreases in 2021—Stats institute

Production of cereals and other crops decreased when compared with the previous year, the Turkish Statistical Institute said in a statement on Thursday.

Production quantities of cereals and other crops in 2021 decreased by 13.4% while vegetables increased by 1.8% and fruits, beverage, and spices crops increased by 5.4% when compared with the previous year.

Production quantities in 2021 became approximately as follows; 61.7 million tons for cereals and other crops, 31.8 million tons for vegetables, and 24.9 million tons for fruits, beverage, and spices crops.

Cereals production decreased in 2021 when compared with the previous year

Cereals production decreased in 2021 with a rate of 14.3% when compared with the previous year and approximately became 31.9 million tons.

 Wheat production decreased by 13.9% and approximately became 17.7 million tons, barley production decreased by 30.7% and approximately become 5.8 million tons, rye production decreased by 32.4% and became 200 thousand tons, oats production decreased by 12.2% and become 276 thousand tons, while maize production increased by 3.8% and approximately became as 6.8 million tons when compared with the previous year.

In the pulses group, a decrease occurred in chickpea by 24.6% and production became 475 thousand tons, dry beans increased by 9.1% and became 305 thousand tons, red lentil decreased by 30.6% and became 228 thousand tons and potatoes, one of tuber crops, decreased by 1.9% and became 5.1 million tons.

In the group of oilseeds, soybean production increased with a rate of 17.2% and became 182 thousand tons, sunflower increased by 16.8% and approximately became 2.4 million tons.

Tobacco production decreased by 7.7% and became 73 thousand tons, sugar beets production decreased by 20.7% and approximately became 18.3 million tons.

Vegetable production increased in 2021 when compared with the previous year

Vegetable production in 2021 became 31.8 million tons with an increasing rate of 1.8% when compared with the previous year.

In the production of subgroups of vegetables, root and tuberous vegetable production increased by 6.9%. In this group, onion (dry) production increased by 9.6% and garlic (dry) production increased by 13.5%.

Production of vegetables cultivated for their fruits increased by 0.9%. In this group, pepper (for processed, capia) production increased by 11.9% and cucumber production increased by 0.2% while tomato production decreased by 0.8%.

Besides, cabbage (white) production increased by 0.6%, while spinach production decreased by 5.7% in the leafy or edible stem vegetable group.

Fruits production increased in 2021 when compared with the previous year

Fruits, beverage and spices crops production increased with a rate of 5.4% and became 24.9 million tons in 2021 when compared with the previous year.

When examining productions of some important fruits, a decrease occurred in apricots production by 4%, in grapes production by 12.8%, in cherries production by 4.8%, while an increase occurred in apples production by 4.5%, in strawberries production by 22.4%, in olive production by 32.1% when compared with the previous year.

In the citrus group, increase became in mandarin production by 14.7%, in oranges production by 30.6%, in lemons production by 30.4%. From nuts, hazelnuts production increased by 2.9%, while pistachios production decreased by 59.7%.

Bananas production increased by 21.3%, while figs production did not change and remained as 320 thousand tons.

Ornamental plants production increased in 2021 when compared with the previous year

Ornamental plants production increased by 2.9% in 2021 when compared to the previous year.

When the shares of flowers in the total ornamental plant production are examined, it was seen that total cut flowers had a share of 62.3% and other ornamental plants had a share of 37.7%.

Cut flowers and indoor ornamental plants production increased by 5.2% and 11.4% respectively while outdoor ornamental plants production decreased by 1.8% when compared to the previous year. (ILKHA)
