“I am utterly pleased to attend this significant event organized by ‘Global Aceh Diaspora’ even remotely on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the tsunami in Aceh in 2004”, Erdoğan said.
“We have strong bonds of friendship with Indonesia that date back centuries ago. We regard the suffering of Indonesians as our pain and their happiness as our joy. Despite the physical distance between our countries, thanks to Allah, we have never left our Indonesian brothers alone during hard times. We have always mobilized all our means for Indonesia every time they needed. We have once again demonstrated this stance in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster in 2024,” Erdoğan added.
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community, the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake occurred at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7) on 26 December, with an epicenter off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
A series of massive tsunami waves grew up to 30 m high once heading inland, after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore. Communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean were devastated, and the tsunamis killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.
The direct results caused major disruptions to living conditions and commerce in coastal provinces of surrounding countries, including Aceh (Indonesia), Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu (India) and Khao Lak (Thailand). Banda Aceh reported the largest number of deaths. (ILKHA)
