Death toll from northern Turkey flash floods rises to 5

At least 5 people were killed and one went missing after flooding and landslides caused by torrential rains hit Turkey's Black Sea region.

Following the heavy rainfall that hit the several provinces of the Black Sea region on Wednesday, streets, and roads in the region overflowed with floodwater.

5 people were killed in floods in Kastamonu where the floodwater left many buildings devastated.

The efforts to find and rescue one missing person is reportedly still ongoing in Bartın, the Interior Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.

The landslides wreaked havoc in the region areas, tearing apart chunks of soil from hills and piling up debris on streets inundated with floodwaters.

According to Turkey’s General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) in a 24-hour period to 11 August 2021, Ulus in Bartin Province recorded 302.4 mm of rain, while Ayancik in Sinop saw 240.5 mm and Küre in Kastamonu recorded 198.9 mm. In the previous 24-hour period, Çayeli in Rize Province recorded 123 mm of rain.  (ILKHA)
