Turkey’s unemployment rate realizes as 12.9% in Q1

Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate occurred as 12.9% with 0.1 percentage point increase, the Turkish Statistical Institute said in a statement on Tuesday.

Seasonally adjusted unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over increased by 142 thousand to 4 million 118 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter in Turkey.

Seasonally adjusted employment rate realized as 43.8%

The number of seasonally adjusted employed persons increased by 627 thousand to 27 million 725 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter. Seasonally adjusted employment rate occurred as 43.8% with increase of 0.8 percentage points.

Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate realized as 50.3%

The seasonally adjusted labor force increased by 767 thousand persons to 31 million 842 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter and the seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 50.3% with 1.0 percentage point increase.

Seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate was 25.3% and seasonally adjusted employment rate was 30.6%

Seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 25.3% with 0.2 percentage point increase in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter and seasonally adjusted employment rate was 30.6% with 0.9 percentage point increase. Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate in this age group realized as 41.0% with 1.3 percentage points increase.

54.9% of seasonally adjusted employment was in the services sector

In the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter, the number of seasonally adjusted agricultural employment increased by 39 thousand persons, industry increased by 251 thousand persons, construction increased by 97 thousand persons and services increased by 240 thousand persons. According to the distribution of employment by sector; 17.5% was employed in agriculture, 21.3% was employed in industry, 6.2% was employed in construction and 54.9% was employed in services.

Seasonally and calendar adjusted weekly average actual working hours realized as 42.7 hours

Seasonally and calendar adjusted number of employed persons at work increased by 1 million 451 thousand persons and reached 26 million 482 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter. The weekly average actual working hours of those at work decreased by 1.2 hours compared to the previous quarter and became 42.7 hours, while the total weekly hours worked increased by 32 million 699 thousand hours and reached 1 billion 131 million 864 thousand hours compared to the previous quarter.

Seasonally adjusted composite measure of labor underutilization rate realized as 27.8%

The rate of composite measure of labor underutilization consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force and unemployment was 27.8% with 1.0 percentage point increase in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter. While combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment realized as 19.3%, combined rate of unemployment and potential labor force realized as 22.1%.

Unemployment rate realized as 13.5%

Unemployment rate realized as 13.5% with 0.1 percentage point decrease in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The number of unemployed persons increased by 89 thousand to 4 million 277 thousand persons compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Employment rate realized as 43.3%

Employment rate realized as 43.3% with 0.3 percentage point increase in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The number of employed persons estimated as 27 million 391 thousand persons with 692 thousand persons increase.

Labor force participation rate realized as 50.0%

Labor force participation rate was 50.0% with 0.3 percentage point increase in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The number of labour force estimated as 31 million 668 thousand persons with 781 thousand persons increase.

The rate of unregistered employment in the non-agricultural sector was 17.1%

In the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter, the rate of unregistered employment, which indicates the share of those who are not affiliated with social security institution in total employment realized as 28.1% with 2.0 percentage point decrease. The rate of unregistered employment in the non-agricultural sector realized as 17.1% with 3.3 percentage point decrease compared to the previous quarter.

69.9% of the employment was regular or casual employees

69.9% of the employment was regular or casual employees, 4.6% were employers, 16.7% were self-employed, 8.8% were unpaid family workers.

The proportion of the young population in the 15-24 age group who are neither in employment nor in education, was 24.7%

The proportion of the young population in the 15-24 age group who are neither in education nor in employment, was 24.7% in the first quarter of 2021. The number of young people, neither in education nor in employment, was 2 million 922 thousand persons.

Long-term unemployed constituted 29.3% of the number of unemployed

The number of unemployed persons (long-term unemployed) for a year or more reached 1 million 252 thousand persons in the first quarter of 2021. Long-term unemployed constituted 29.3% of the number of unemployed. (ILKHA)
