Turkish Vice President: The number of fatalities from Izmir earthquake rose to 55

The number of people dying in the earthquake that hit Turkey’s western Izmir province on Friday rose to 55, said Fuat Oktay, Turkey’s Vice President, said on Sunday.

“The number of people injured has been 896,” he said and added that 831 aftershocks have occurred since the earthquake.

There are 26 heavy damaged buildings that have to be destroyed urgently, he noted.

The search and rescue efforts to recover people trapped under the rubble are continuing at 26 areas.

The massive magnitude 6.6 quake, which struck the Aegean region of Turkey on Friday, was felt in both Greece and Turkey.

Two people have lost their lives on the Greek island of Samos, the Greek officials said. (ILKHA)
