Hearing Musharraf's petitions against the verdict, the court also ruled that the treason case against the former president Musharraf was not prepared in accordance with the law.
On 17 December 2019, a special court declared him a traitor and sentenced him to death for abrogating and suspending the constitution in November 2007. The three-member panel of the special court, which issued the order, was spearheaded by Chief Justice of the Peshawer High Court Waqar Ahmad Seth. He is also the first Pakistani Army General to be sentenced to death.
Musharraf is reportedly seriously ill, and analysts do not expect him to face the sentence as Dubai has no extradition treaty with Pakistan. Nonetheless, his lawyer in the UK appealed, calling for a retrial. (ILKHA)
