Türkiye urges caution in post-Assad Syria to prevent terror threats

Speaking on Sunday, Fidan highlighted Türkiye’s commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity and the importance of maintaining stability in the region.

During Syria's prolonged civil war, the absence of an effective administration allowed terrorist groups to gain a foothold, with the PKK/YPG seeking to establish a corridor near Türkiye’s border. Turkish forces have been actively deployed to counter this threat. Fidan underscored the necessity of vigilance to prevent both Daesh/ISIS and PKK activities during this transitional period.

Fidan urged all regional and global actors to act with restraint, warning against actions that could exacerbate instability. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s dedication to preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial unity, stating, "Syrian state institutions must be protected, and opposition forces must immediately unite."

Highlighting the Syrian people's role in shaping their nation's future, Fidan expressed hope for the return of millions of displaced Syrians. "The Syrian people will reshape their country's future," he said, pointing to the potential for rebuilding with the support of regional neighbors.

Türkiye has expressed its readiness to collaborate with Syria’s emerging administration to help stabilize and rebuild the country. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s proactive engagement in the region, working alongside neighboring countries to support Syria's reconstruction.

Since anti-regime forces took control of Damascus on Sunday, there has been speculation regarding the whereabouts of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad. Fidan confirmed that Türkiye has no concrete information about Assad’s location, adding that he may have fled abroad.

The Turkish Foreign Minister’s remarks come at a critical time for Syria, as the country faces the challenge of transitioning from years of conflict to a future of peace and stability. (ILKHA)
