Hamas: Israeli annexation plans show "colonial ambitions”

Hamas issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks by far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding the annexation of the West Bank, stating that his comments underscore what Hamas describes as Israel’s colonial ambitions and disregard for Palestinian national rights.

In a statement released Monday, Hamas asserted that Smotrich’s comments prove the "illusion" of peace with Israel, which Hamas characterized as “founded on terrorism and usurping rights and lands.” The organization emphasized its commitment to resisting such plans, adding that "we will never allow a terrorist person like Smotrich and other Zionist war criminals to carry out any of their malicious schemes.” Hamas reiterated that the West Bank remains “purely Palestinian land” and integral to a future independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Hamas called on international bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the United Nations, to take steps to curb Israel’s actions, warning that Israel’s plans risk escalating regional and global tensions.

The statement followed Smotrich’s comments, as reported by the Jerusalem Post, in which he stated, “2025 will be the year of sovereignty in the West Bank” and indicated he had instructed Israel’s defense ministry to begin preparing infrastructure for this expansion. Smotrich noted that the recent U.S. election results, specifically the victory of president-elect Donald Trump, provide a favorable opportunity for Israel’s plans in the region.

Smotrich, a vocal advocate for annexing the West Bank, previously displayed a map that included both the West Bank and Jordan as part of Israel during a conference in Paris, drawing further attention to his intentions. (ILKHA)
