Türkiye's service sector final energy consumption hits 503,682 terajoules in 2023

Final energy consumption in Türkiye’s service sector reached 503,682 terajoules in 2023, according to the recent findings of the Survey on Final Energy Consumption in Services.

Among the various sub-sectors, "wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" held the largest share, accounting for 34.4% of total energy use. This was followed by "accommodation and food service activities" at 18.7% and "water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities" at 9.9%.

Electricity was the dominant energy source across the services sector, making up 56.2% of total consumption with 283,291 terajoules. Natural gas followed, comprising 29.2% of energy use, while petroleum products accounted for 6.7%. In the leading sub-sector, "wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles," electricity use was particularly high, covering 67.2% of energy needs, with natural gas and solid fossil fuels following at 21.4% and 6.7%, respectively.

Data centers across Türkiye consumed a total of 587 GWh of electricity in 2023, as reported by the survey. The significant energy demand in these centers underscores the growing need for electricity in the digital infrastructure of the services sector.
