Russian lieutenant general killed in clashes in Syria

In a statement, the governor said: “Nikolai Mikhailenko died during special military missions in the Syrian Arab Republic,” coinciding with the general’s funeral in Sevastopol, Crimea.

According to Russian media, Mikhailenko lost his life during an operation aimed at rescuing kidnapped Russian soldiers. The operation led to a confrontation with members of the terrorist group ISIS. The incident highlights the ongoing instability in Syria, where civil war has raged since 2011.
