UN Security Council to hold session on humanitarian aid and ceasefire for Gaza

The United Nations Security Council is convening a session today to receive a briefing on the implementation of UN Resolution 2720, which was adopted in December 2023.

The resolution calls for urgent measures to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and to establish conditions for a ceasefire.

Sigrid Kaag, the Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, will present an update on the progress and challenges related to the resolution’s implementation. Her briefing will cover the current status of humanitarian aid efforts and the steps taken towards achieving a ceasefire in the region.

Additionally, Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), will provide a media briefing on the matter. UNOPS has been tasked with activating and managing the mechanisms outlined in Resolution 2720, which includes overseeing the delivery of aid and supporting reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

This session marks a significant step in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advancing the objectives set forth in Resolution 2720. (ILKHA)
