The massacre occurred on Thursday and Friday, according to medical sources and eyewitnesses.

The attack unfolded when paramilitary forces initially met resistance from villagers, prompting a retreat. They later returned with reinforcements, launching a full-scale assault. A survivor reported that three military vehicles were involved in the attack.

The horrific incident comes as US-sponsored peace talks aimed at ending the 16-month-long civil war are underway in Switzerland. Notably, the Sudanese army has refused to participate in these negotiations.

The conflict has displaced nearly 726,000 people in Sennar state alone, adding to the millions already uprooted by the war across Sudan.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, which has been battling the Sudanese army since April 2023, captured the state capital of Sinja in June. (ILKHA)
