The landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall, struck several villages, including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, causing widespread destruction.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed that heavy rain continues to impact the region, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. “Bodies remain trapped under the landslide debris,” she stated.
To date, 154 bodies have been recovered and handed over to the district administration for identification. Genetic samples are being collected from the recovered body parts, with DNA tests underway to assist in identifying the deceased.
The landslides occurred early Tuesday morning, during a period of intense rainfall, affecting the Meppadi area of Wayanad. The landslides happened within a span of two hours while residents were asleep, resulting in significant casualties and damage.
Rescue operations are ongoing as teams work to locate and assist those trapped under the debris. The situation remains critical as efforts continue to address the humanitarian crisis caused by this natural disaster. (ILKHA)
