Türkiye sees major growth in libraries, books, and library usage

Türkiye's library system has seen a major expansion in 2023, with the number of libraries reaching nearly 49,000 according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

This substantial increase reflects a new approach to library statistics, which are now based on administrative records.

The growth extends beyond just quantity. The number of books across all library types has also risen significantly, with an overall increase of 32.6% compared to the previous year. Public libraries saw the most significant rise in book holdings, with a 4.8% increase. University libraries also experienced a notable growth of 2.7%, while formal and non-formal education institutions witnessed a remarkable surge of 56.9%.

The digital realm within libraries is flourishing as well. University libraries reported a 23.4% increase in electronic books, highlighting a growing trend towards digital resources.

Public library usage is booming too, with a 25.3% increase in visitors compared to 2022. The number of registered members also jumped by 11.2%.

Türkiye's publishing industry is thriving, with a substantial 18.4% rise in published materials in 2023. Academic publications led the pack, accounting for nearly 30% of all published materials, followed by educational and adult fiction categories.

The expansion of Türkiye's library network and the increase in published materials highlight the country's dedication to enhancing educational resources and promoting a culture of reading. (ILKHA)
