Preliminary figures from the country’s official electoral body indicate that Sheinbaum, 61, received approximately 60% of the votes in Sunday’s election.

Prior to her run for presidency, she served as the first female mayor of Mexico City. A founder of Morena, the left-wing party of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum has been a significant figure in Mexican politics.

Under Mexico’s constitution, a president cannot be re-elected for a second term, and the presidency is limited to six years. Sheinbaum is set to officially assume her role on October 1, marking a new chapter in Mexico’s political history. (ILKHA)
