The incident occurred on Saturday when a boat carrying 26 people capsized in the Basawul area of the Momand Dara district.
Quraishi Badloon, Director of Information and Culture in Nangarhar, reported that 16 individuals were rescued by local communities and authorities. Regrettably, eight people lost their lives in the accident, while two individuals remain missing.
Deputy Governor Saeed Ahmad Banawri attributed the tragedy to the boat becoming overloaded with passengers, causing water overflow and engine failure. Recent heavy rains have led to rising river levels, making crossings perilous.
The rescued individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical assistance.
Local media highlighted the lack of nearby bridges, forcing residents to rely on boats of questionable quality for river crossings. This incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures in water transportation across the region. (ILKHA)
