The attack, which occurred on May 8th, targeted displaced people in the North Kivu province.

While no group has claimed responsibility, authorities suspect rebel groups are behind the violence. The M23 rebel movement, which has been increasingly active in recent months, is believed to be a possible culprit.  Women and children are reported to be among the casualties.

This attack comes amidst renewed tensions in the region. The M23's resurgence in November 2021 led to widespread displacement and a diplomatic crisis between the DRC and neighboring Rwanda.

The DRC accuses Rwanda of backing the M23 and seeking to exploit the region's rich mineral resources. (ILKHA)
