This move adds to the growing number of countries supporting Palestinian statehood at the UN.

The Bahamas' recognition is based on the principles of self-determination enshrined in the UN Charter and international covenants.  The Ministry emphasized Palestine's right "to freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development."

This recognition comes as Palestine seeks full UN membership. Palestine currently holds observer state status, allowing participation in debates but not voting rights.

Admission to full membership requires Security Council approval, which faces potential roadblocks from permanent members with veto power. (ILKHA)
