NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg traveled to Kyiv on Monday for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concerning the current state of the conflict and NATO's commitment to supporting Ukraine.
During a joint press conference with President Zelenskyy, Stoltenberg commended the leadership of the Ukrainian president and the bravery of Ukrainian forces and citizens. However, he acknowledged that leadership and bravery alone are insufficient to repel Russian forces, stressing the need for arms and ammunition. Stoltenberg highlighted the serious consequences of delays in support, stating that Ukraine has been outgunned for months, allowing Russia to advance on the front line.
In response to President Zelenskyy's appeal for increased support, Stoltenberg announced that NATO defense ministers have agreed to bolster assistance to Ukraine. He welcomed significant aid packages from the United States, as well as commitments from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, with further announcements expected soon.
Looking ahead to the NATO Summit in July, Stoltenberg stated that allies are planning for a greater NATO role in coordinating security assistance and training for Ukraine. He emphasized the need for a long-term, multi-year financial commitment to demonstrate sustained support to Ukraine and to deter Russia.
Regarding Ukraine's NATO membership, Stoltenberg declared that Ukraine's rightful place is within the alliance, affirming that efforts are underway to pave the way for eventual membership. He assured that Ukraine will become a NATO member when the time is right.
During his visit, Stoltenberg also addressed the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, stressing the importance of preserving Ukraine's freedom and democratic values. He visited the National Defence University and met with members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as staff from the NATO Representation to Ukraine, expressing gratitude for their dedication.
