The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the launch of dozens of drones and missiles towards Israeli positions in the occupied Palestinian territories. This attack was in retaliation to an Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria, a few days prior.
Vanessa Frazier, the Maltese President of the Security Council for April, announced that the Council will meet at 04:00 pm local time on Sunday in response to Israel's request. This request comes despite Israel's criticism of all UN departments over the past six months since the onset of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, has written to Frazier, calling for an emergency meeting to discuss Iran’s attack. Erdan has urged the UN to unequivocally condemn Iran's response to Israeli aggression.
On the other hand, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, has warned that should Israel commit any further military aggression, Iran's response will be stronger and more resolute. He conveyed this in letters sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Frazier on Saturday.
Iravani stated that Iran's actions were in exercise of its inherent right to self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations. He expressed regret that the UNSC has failed to maintain international peace and security, allowing Israel to violate international law and escalate tensions in the region.
He concluded by affirming that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right of self-defense when required. (ILKHA)
