Simon Harris elected as Ireland's youngest-ever prime minister

The 37-year-old, known for his role in steering Ireland's initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, garnered widespread support from parliament members, securing a confirmation vote of 88-69 on Tuesday. Harris received backing from independent lawmakers, as well as his coalition partners Fianna Fail and the Green Party.

Having previously served as the health and higher education minister, Harris was elected unopposed as the new leader of the centre-right Fine Gael party last month, shortly after Varadkar's unexpected departure.

Accepting his nomination with gratitude, Harris pledged to uphold the trust placed in him by the parliament. He expressed his commitment to leading with unity, collaboration, and mutual respect, acknowledging the support of his coalition partners.

During a recent conference of Fine Gael members, Harris outlined his plans to re-energize and refocus the party's efforts, emphasizing core values such as promoting business, farming, and law and order.
