The report found that road motor vehicles in Turkey logged a total of 343 billion kilometers in 2022. Passenger cars were the dominant force on the road, making up 55.7% of the total distance traveled. They were followed by small trucks (20.4%), trucks (12.4%), motorcycles (4.4%), minibuses (4.0%), and buses (3.2%).
While the overall number of vehicles increased by 5% compared to 2021, the total distance traveled grew at a slightly slower pace of 4.3%. This suggests that vehicles are being driven less on average.
Looking at the growth by vehicle type, motorcycles saw the most significant rise in both numbers (10.6%) and distance traveled (7.0%). Passenger cars also experienced growth in both categories (4.1% and 7.0%, respectively).
The report further dives into average annual distances traveled by different vehicle types. Buses topped the list at 53,409 kilometers, followed by trucks (46,305 km), minibuses (27,951 km), small trucks (16,382 km), passenger cars (13,415 km), and lastly motorcycles (3,648 km).
Interestingly, when examining passenger cars by fuel type, diesel cars were the most popular choice for long journeys. They accounted for 48.4% of the total distance traveled by passenger cars, followed by LPG (30.5%) and gasoline (21.1%).
The report also analyzed the correlation between vehicle age and distance traveled. Vehicles aged 12 years and above, which make up 48.4% of the total vehicle fleet in Turkey, surprisingly logged the most kilometers (37.0%). This was followed by vehicles aged 4-7 years (23.5%), 0-3 years (20.3%), and 8-11 years (19.2%). This trend held true for passenger cars as well, with the oldest category (12 years and above) traveling the farthest (35.6%). (ILKHA)
