In response to a stark warning from the UN Special Rapporteur, Amnesty International has issued a urgent call for action to prevent genocide in Gaza. The report highlights concerning findings regarding Israel's actions in the region, prompting calls for swift intervention to protect Palestinian lives.

Amnesty International Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, has described the report as a pivotal moment that demands immediate action from the international community. "The time to act to prevent genocide is now," Callamard emphasized, stressing the need for states to fulfill their obligations under the Genocide Convention.

Key recommendations from Amnesty International include implementing the UN Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire, pressuring Israel to cease attacks on civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid, and imposing a comprehensive arms embargo on all parties involved in the conflict.

Furthermore, Callamard highlighted the importance of ensuring full funding and operational freedom for UNRWA, the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, and supporting accountability efforts, including investigations by the International Criminal Court.

The urgency of the situation was underscored by Callamard, who noted the escalation of violence since a similar warning of genocide was issued by the International Court of Justice two months ago. Amnesty International echoed calls for an enduring ceasefire, emphasizing its role in preventing further civilian suffering and enforcing measures outlined by the ICJ. (ILKHA)
