At least 22 migrants dead after boat capsizes off Turkish coast

A heartbreaking incident unfolded late Thursday off the coast of the northwestern Çanakkale's Eceabat district, as an inflatable boat carrying irregular migrants capsized, resulting in a devastating loss of life.

Reports confirm the tragic death toll of at least 22 individuals, including five children, with uncertainty shrouding the total number of passengers onboard.

“According to the latest information, there are 22 confirmed fatalities. However, there is still ambiguity regarding the exact number of individuals aboard the boat. Our investigation into this matter is ongoing," Çanakkale’s Governor Ilhami Aktaş stated.

The ill-fated boat sank approximately 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) off the coast of Eceabat, prompting swift response efforts from local authorities. Governor Aktaş highlighted the immediate mobilization of emergency teams, comprising 18 boats, one plane, two helicopters, one UAV, and 502 personnel, to the scene.

"All available teams were promptly dispatched to the site as soon as we received the distress call," Governor Aktaş affirmed. "Coast Guard units managed to rescue four individuals, who were subsequently transported to the hospital. However, there remains uncertainty surrounding the total number of passengers aboard the boat, and investigations are ongoing."

In the wake of this tragedy, numerous ambulances have been stationed at Kabatepe Port, ready to provide essential aid and assistance to those affected.
