South Africa vows prosecution for citizens serving in zionist army amid Gaza genocide

In a firm stance against israel's ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, has issued a warning that nationals who have served in the israeli army will face prosecution upon returning to the country.

During a recent African National Congress meeting, Pandor reiterated her country's solidarity with Palestine and emphasized that South African citizens who enlist in the israeli occupation forces (IOF) will be held accountable upon their return.

This announcement comes after Pandor's earlier statement in December, where she cautioned South African citizens against joining foreign armed forces, citing potential violations of domestic and international law.

Israeli law mandates all citizens, including dual nationals, to serve in the military, even if they reside abroad permanently. Amid the conflict in Gaza, the israeli army has called upon reserve soldiers, including those living abroad, to join the fighting.

South Africa's foreign ministry previously warned nationals against participating in the war in Gaza, expressing grave concerns over reports of citizens joining the IOF. The ministry emphasized that naturalized citizens could risk losing their citizenship.

South Africa's opposition to israel's actions in Gaza has been steadfast, with the country leading a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians in the besieged enclave. The ICJ recently issued provisional measures, urging Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and prevent acts of genocide.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 31,000 Palestinians killed, according to reports. South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile reaffirmed the country's commitment to seeking justice through the ICJ, stating that they will not tolerate genocide and highlighting the staggering toll on civilian lives in Gaza.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, South Africa's stance underscores its unwavering support for Palestine and its determination to hold individuals accountable for their involvement in the genocide. (ILKHA)
