The strike, which was organized by the trade union UFO, commenced at 4 a.m. local time (0300GMT) at Frankfurt Airport, the country's busiest hub, and continued until 11 p.m. (2200GMT).
Lufthansa Airlines confirmed that approximately 600 flights arriving at or departing from Frankfurt Airport have been canceled due to the strike. Passengers were advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
The union announced that the strike would extend to Munich Airport on Wednesday, starting at 4 a.m. local time (0300GMT) and lasting until 11 p.m. (2200GMT). This action is expected to ground around 400 Lufthansa flights, affecting an additional 50,000 passengers.
UFO is demanding a 15% wage increase for its nearly 18,000 members working with Lufthansa over an 18-month contract period. Additionally, the union is seeking an inflation adjustment bonus of €3,000 ($3,280). (ILKHA)
