Ukraine extends martial law and conscription for another 90 days

This marks the tenth such extension since the start of the ongoing war with Russia.

The measures, originally imposed on February 24, 2022, will now remain in effect until May 13, 2024. This decision comes as the conflict continues with no immediate end in sight.

Under martial law, the Ukrainian government possesses additional powers to restrict certain rights and freedoms, prioritize military needs, and mobilize resources. This includes the ability to implement curfews, control media outlets, and conduct conscription drives.

The general conscription allows the Ukrainian military to call up eligible citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 for military service. However, legal exemptions and deferrals exist for certain individuals.

President Zelenskyy submitted the extension bills to parliament on February 5th, and they were subsequently approved by lawmakers on February 6th. The Speaker of the parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, also signed off on the legislation on the same day.

This extension highlights the ongoing challenges and uncertainties faced by Ukraine in the war against Russia.
