Turkish Communication Director urges responsible reporting amidst conflict disinformation
Fahrettin Altun, the Turkish Presidency's Director of Communications, issued a statement on social media platform X, calling for responsible reporting and an end to the manipulation of information during times of conflict.
Altun emphasized the importance of truth during war and conflict, asserting: "In times of war and conflict, truth often becomes one of the first victims. As Türkiye, we are determined to prevent this from happening. We call on everyone, including state institutions and news outlets, to act responsibly to avoid worsening the situation and deepening the crisis."
Highlighting the heightened regional tensions and military conflict, Altun stressed the need for international audiences to receive accurate information. He stated: "The unfortunate events unfolding in the Israel-Palestine conflict are being manipulated by various organized groups through misinformation campaigns. By sensationalizing the news and fabricating facts, dishonest actors try to misguide audiences for their political goals."
Altun disclosed that the Directorate of Communications is actively working to combat disinformation, instructing fact-checking and news analyst teams to be extra vigilant. He cautioned against the potential consequences of unsubstantiated claims and fake stories, citing their capacity to inflame global sentiments and contribute to chaos.
As President Erdogan has emphasized, Altun underscored the critical importance of avoiding the targeting of civilians and ensuring that international audiences receive accurate information about civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation. He called upon news sources to report responsibly and sensibly, particularly in times of conflict when misinformation can exacerbate an already dire situation on the ground.
"The Directorate of Communications is working around the clock to counter disinformation to prevent potentially disastrous consequences of inflammatory and invented stories. We are aware of our responsibility not to allow the sacrifice of truth for political purposes," Altun declared.
In conclusion, he warned that misinformation can make problems more intractable and solutions increasingly difficult. While the Turkish government works to prevent further conflict and humanitarian tragedy, Altun affirmed their commitment to ensuring that truth prevails in the current conflict situation. (ILKHA)
