Türkiye: Traffick accidents kill more than 5,000 people in 2021

Among all those accidents, 998 thousand 390 accidents were with material loss and 187 thousand 963 were with death or injury. For the accidents involving death or injury, 78.6% of them occurred at inhabited area and 21.4% occurred at uninhabited area.

5 thousand 362 persons were killed and 274 thousand 615 persons were injured 

As a result of 187 thousand 963 accidents involving death or injury occurred in Türkiye during year 2021, 2 thousand 421 people were killed at accident scene and 2 thousand 941 people who were injured at traffic accident and sent to health facilities died within 30 days after the accident due to related accident and its impacts. 49.3% of deaths and 72.0% of injuries occurred at inhabited area whereas 50.7% of deaths and 28.0% of injuries occurred at uninhabited area. 

Number of persons killed increased by 10.2% compared to previous year

In Türkiye by year 2021 compared to 2020 the year passed under the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, there were increases for total road motor vehicles in traffic by 4.6%, total accidents by 20.6%, accidents involving death or injury by 25.1%, accidents with material loss by 19.8%, total number of persons killed by 10.2% and injuries by 21.4%.

In Türkiye 7.4 traffic accidents involving death or injury occurred per thousand vehicles

When number of accidents involving death or injury are analyzed by provinces, accidents per thousand road motor vehicles occurred most at Bingöl and least at İstanbul.

47.6% of the persons killed in traffic accidents were drivers

Among the persons killed in the accidents occurred in road network of Türkiye during year 2021, 47.6% of them were drivers, 30.3% were passengers and 22.1% were pedestrians. Concerning the gender breakdown of persons killed 77.2% of them were men and 22.8% were women; whereas for the persons injured 70.5% of them were men and 29.5% were women.

Driver faults were the primary fault causing traffic accidents with 87.1% share

Looking at the 224 thousand 418 total faults causing accidents involving death or injury in Türkiye during year 2021, it was observed that 87.1% of faults were driver faults, 8.2% were pedestrian faults, 2.6% were vehicle faults, 1.8% were passenger faults and 0.4% were road faults. 

68.9% of traffic accidents involving death or injury occurred at day time

Concerning the 187 thousand 963 accidents involving death or injury occurred in year 2021 in the road network of Türkiye, 68.9% of accidents occurred at day, 28.4% occurred at night and 2.7% occurred at twilight.

50.5% of traffic accidents involving death or injury were two vehicle accidents

When accidents involving death or injury and their results in year 2021 are examined by number of vehicles involved, 50.5% of those accidents were two vehicle accidents, 43.6% were single vehicle accidents and 5.9% were multi vehicle accidents. Within total number of persons killed, 54.8% were at single vehicle accidents, 38.9% were two vehicle accidents and 6.3% were multi vehicle accidents. Regarding number of persons injured, 52.0% of them were at two vehicle accidents, 40.7% of them were at single vehicle accidents and 7.3% of them were at multi vehicle accidents.

308 thousand 442 vehicles were involved in traffic accidents with death or injury

In Türkiye, the distribution of 308 thousand 442 road motor vehicles involved in accidents with death or injury was cars 49.4%, motorcycles 20.9%, small trucks 15.1%, road tractors 2.3%, minibuses 2.3%, trucks 2.2%, buses 1.6%, tractors 0.9% and the other vehicles 5.3% during year 2021.

Traffic accidents involving death or injury occurred most in July least in February

In Türkiye, by year 2021 looking at the monthly distribution of 187 thousand 963 accidents involving death or injury, accidents most frequently occurred in July with 11.7% share whereas accidents least frequently occurred in February with 4.8% share. Regarding the distribution among the days of the week, accidents involving death or injury most frequently occurred on Monday with 15.7% share and least frequently on Sunday with 11.7% share.
