In the first local elections after the revolution in Tunisia, the Islamic Ennahda Movement Party received 27.5 percent of the votes, while secular Nida Tounes Party was second with 22.5 percent.

In Tunisia, polling stations for the first local elections closed at 6 p.m. local time on Sunday. The Tunisian Supreme Election Commission announced that the country's participation rate is 33.7 percent. The lack of participation in the vote in Tunisia, where the economic bottleneck is deepening, is said to be the sign of the people's desperation for the current political structure.

The exact results of the election expect to be announced until May 9.

The conditions in candidate lists to increase representation in Tunisia made it difficult for the parties to nominate candidates in all regions. According to the Tunisian election law, there are conditions such that the numbers of male and female candidates should be equal on the lists, one of every 6 names should be under 35 years old and a disabled person should be placed among the first 10 candidates. In elections, soldiers and members of parliament cannot be candidates. (ILKHA)
