Syrian women force sexual exploitation in return for humanitarian aid

As the millions of refugees have been displaced by the civil war that has been going on for about 7 years in Syria, it has turned out that Syrian women who are trying to stand up with the help made in the regions under the control of the United Nations are forced to sexual exploitation in return for humanitarian aid.

According to a report by the United Nations, some officials in Syria, especially in the areas held by US-backed armed groups, who are on behalf of the UN and other organizations, have forced Syrian women to commit to sexual exploitation in return for aid.

Despite similar warnings three years ago, it became clear that such events continued to occur, especially in the southern regions of Syria.

"Examples were given of women or girls marrying officials for a short period of time for 'sexual services' in order to receive meals; distributors asking for telephone numbers of women and girls; giving them lifts to their houses 'to take something in return' or obtaining distributions' in exchange for a visit to her home' or 'in exchange for services, such as spending a night with them'," said in the report entitled "Voices from Syria 2018."

The United Nations and its charitable organizations have expressed concern that sexual abuse and harassment will certainly not be compromised, but that there are so many forces to offer sexual favor in return of aid, that some Syrian women refuse to go to aid delivery centers, and that if they do, people will think they are prostitutes for help.

According to a study conducted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), women in many provinces of Syria, especially those who have lost their husbands or divorced, and those who have had to leave their homes, are forcing sexual exploitation.

Millions of people who have to leave their homes due to the Syrian war survive with international humanitarian aid.

In June 2015, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported that charitable workers abused 190 women and girls in Daraa and Quneitra. (ILKHA)
