Permission for muftis to perform marriage goes into effect
The legal article titled "Draft Law on the Amendment of the Civil Registry Services Act and Some Other Laws," allowing state religious officials (Muftis) to perform and register marriages was published in the Official Gazette.
The bill includes an article allowing "muftis" - religious officials from the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) - to perform and register marriages and was submitted to parliament on July 25, was published in the Official Gazette on Nov. 3, after approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Mufti authorized to perform marriage
According to the new law, "The married officers are the mayor or the civil servant appointed for this duty and local authorities [Mukhtar]. The ministry may grant the authority and duty of performing the marriage to the provincial population and citizenship directorates, the population directorates and the foreign representatives. If one of the spouses is foreigners then the county municipal prefectural governorships and population managers are authorized. "The provincial and district muftis" has been added after the "foreign representatives" in the article." (ILKHA)
