The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that 8 thousand 500 refugees have lost their lives trying to reach Europe since Alan Kurdi lost her life September 2, 2015.

“Despite a serious decline in transitions to Europe since Alan's death, people are still losing their lives trying to migrate to Europe,” the UNHCR statement said.

22.5 million people left their country due to wars

In the statement, it is stated that at the end of 2016, 22.5 million people left their countries due to wars, while half of this number was children.

While Alan Kurdi was trying to pass on a boat from Turkiye’s Bodrum with her family from to Greece in 2015, her inanimate body that hit the shore effected an echo in the world after their boat sank. (ILKHA)
