18th anniversary of Marmara Earthquake

18 years have passed since the earthquake in Kocaeli's Gölcük district on August 17, which continued for 45 seconds at 7.4 magnitudes. Those who lost their lives in the earthquake have commemorated at the ceremonies held.

Marmara Earthquake, which affects Turkish history deeply, felt a wide area from Ankara to Izmir and according to official reports, 17 thousand 480 people lost their lives, 23 thousand 781 people were injured and 505 people were disabled.

285 thousand 211 houses and 42 thousand 902 business sites were damaged in the earthquake that caused great loss of life and property.

9 thousand 477 in Kocaeli, 3 thousand 891 in Sakarya, 2 thousand 504 in Yalova, 981 in Istanbul, 270 in Bolu, 268 in Bursa, 86 in Eskişehir and 3 in Zonguldak, totally 17 thousand 480 people lost their lives in the earthquake. About 24 thousand people were injured and more than a hundred thousand remained homeless.

Due to the earthquake, only about 17 thousand buildings collapsed in Kocaeli, while 91 thousand houses suffered medium damage and 102 thousand 822 houses suffered little damage. 14 thousand 133 business sites have become unusable. After the earthquake, about 150 thousand earthquake victims were sheltered in prefabricated tents until buildings constructed for them. (ILKHA)
