The Independence Referendum, which is regarded as the first step in the process of nationalization of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, is scheduled for 25 September. Director of the Theology Faculty of Raperin University, located in the town of Rana, Sulaymaniyah, Ibrahim Abdurrahman evaluated the independence referendum and anticipations to ILKHA’s correspondent.

He said that independence referendum is the legitimate right of every nation as well as for Kurdish people, Dr. Ibrahim said that there shouldn’t be a restraint to this situation.

“If the referendum is not today, it will be tomorrow, not tomorrow, but surely a year later”

Indicating that Kurdistan is available for the referendum, Ibrahim said that the regional government has been working hard for the state for 25 years besides its experiences.

Ibrahim said, “The referendum will be held someday. If not today, then tomorrow, or a year later, but surely there will be a referendum. Because we look at the whole of the world, many states have their own rights and state of mind many years ago, although they are small as a population and geographically smaller. Why should not we be independent like them?”

“Kurds want independence”

Dr. Ibrahim stated that the Kurdistan region has many problems within many enemies, “At this point, all of the Kurds need to come to a conclusion on the referendum. Because independence is a legitimate right of the Kurdish people. We have a theoretical conflict on independence. This conflict is all over Kurdistan's geography. All Kurds want the state to be established, but they think that there will be problems in practice. I do not think that any Kurds will think of the opposite of the establishment of Kurdistan. But as I said, there are different opinions at the point of implementation. Those who think of the prospect of the referendum, if any, should sit down and talk to them before September 25th. Because I think that these conflicts can be solved by dialogue.”

Saying that the independence referendum is a major event and that it is important for the Kurds Dr. Ibrahim stated that opinion leaders, especially NGOs and political parties, should come together in this important process and congratulate them at conferences, added, “We must make this referendum with a loud voice as a result of the Alliance.”

“The result of the referendum is hard to predict at the moment”

Dr. Ibrahim hoped that the Referendum would pass in peace and that all parties would be pleased with the outcome, said: “The date of the referendum is not important, the important thing that the referendum to be good for the four parts of the Kurt. It is important that the hearts of the Kurds become complacency and the conflicts within us are over. The result of the referendum is hard to predict right now, but hopefully, we hope it will be good.” (M. Salih Keskin - ILKHA)
