Former Justice Minister Bozdağ had to explain in official twitter account of the deliberate distortions of some circles regarding the amendment of the mufti to grant the authority of official marriage consent.

Bozdağ stated that the Draft Bill that changed some of the provisions of the Population Services Law did not change the marriage license and the marriage barriers and that the Draft Law amending some of the provisions of the Population Services Law did not change the definition of the married employee.

Bozdağ said that the ministry could give the provincial population/citizenship directorate, the population directorates, and the foreign representative offices the authority of marriage and duties. Bozdağ added that the amendment of the law was adding the “provincial and district muftis” to the ministry's marriage authority and the duty.

“The bill promotes and facilitates official wedding”

Bozdağ said that if the amendment of the bill is accepted, the ministry will be able to give official marriage powers to the provincial / district muftis in addition to the existing ones. The amendment encourages and facilitates the official marriage by offering new options in addition to the citizenship. This will ensure that the law of marriage will expedite the official marriage, and that will preserve marriage law of women. The amendment does not force anybody to marry an official marriage in provincial / county mufti, only offers additional options to the citizens.”

“Everyone has the right and the authority to adjudicate the official marriage, in accordance with the legal requirements,” Bozdağ said.

"Regulation does not encourage marriages at a young age"

Referring to the discussions on secularism, Bozdağ said, “This change is not against the principle of secularism, but on the contrary to the principle of secularism. Those who claim that it promotes marriage at a young age, either not aware of the change or falsify.” (ILKHA)
