The Srebrenica Massacre ... is the tragedy of humanity, the most civilian massacre in Europe after the Second World War.

In Bosnia, on July 11, 1995, more than 8 thousand Muslims, male-female, child-old, were massacred by the Serbian army, armed with heavy weapons under Ratko Mladic commander.

Srebrenica, the largest massacre after World War II in Europe, was declared a “safe zone” for civilians by the United Nations during the Battle of Bosnia. But when Serb forces entered Sarajevo's eastern city, multinational forces retreated without showing any resistance to Serbian forces. More than 8 thousand Muslim men were massively massacred by Serb soldiers after the region was under the control of the Serbs.

On July 11, 1995, the Serbian army entered the UN-protected Srebrenica. In the camp where 35 thousand Bosnia lives, all men, children, young and old, were moved to the mass execution points by buses. 8 thousand 342 Bosnians, whom the UN peacekeepers handed over with their own hands, were slaughtered within 3 days. The massacre which the UN and of Europe were only watching, became the final curtain of 3-years Bosnian war where more than 100 thousand people murdered. Though 22 years have passed, the Bosnies still live the pain of war, waiting for the prosecution of criminals, and they continue to search for the bodies of those who have lost their lives.

Following this incident, which was one of the most brutal and bloody pages of the Battle of Bosnia, the vast majority of the massacres were buried in the Potoçari Cemetery, which is the base of UN troops and is located just opposite the area where thousands of people have sheltered.

The number of graves in Potoçari Monument Cemetery will rise to 6 thousand 575 with 71 victims of genocide to be buried this year.

It has been documented in the massacre that females, babies and children were also killed. Apart from the Serb army, Serbian special security forces, known as “Scorpions”, also participated in the massacre. Although the United Nations has declared Srebrenica a safe haven, the presence of 400 armed Dutch peacekeepers has not prevented the massacre. The Srebrenica massacre is also important for the fact that it has been the largest mass human killings in Europe since World War 2 and the first legally documented genocide in Europe. The Western powers did not give importance for this documented and conscious genocide like the unrecorded Jewish massacres.

In the massacre carried out near the end of July, most of the Dutch soldiers who had handed Srebrenica to Serb soldiers had to be treated psychologically because of the massacre they had carried out when they returned to their countries. A large part of Dutch soldiers have expressed their regrets at every opportunity. “I wanted to die, I do not forgive myself for not protecting the people who took refuge in us when we promised to protect innocent people,” said one of the soldiers who book the moments in Srebrenica. In fact, these words were the greatest document of the ethnic slaughter in the city.

Radovan Karadzic, head of the Srebrenica Massacre, was tried after he was captured. The trial, seen as one of the most important war crimes trials since World War II, ruled that Karadzic wanted the Bosniak men in Srebrenica to be destroyed. The court also found Radovan Karadzic guilty of “crimes against humanity” during the Bosnian war and sentenced him to a total of 40 years in prison. The case is regarded as the most important trial of war crimes since the Second World War.

The International Court of Justice described Srebrenica as genocide in 2007. (Osman İçli - ILKHA)
